We were reviewing our survey data today, and discovered something
interesting - 7,278 Market Samurai users said that they wanted to
increase their web-site traffic.
This is fantastic - it's precisely what Market Samurai excels at,
because it's able to find high traffic, low competition keywords
that you can achieve easy rankings for.
But we've noticed lately that some people aren't getting their
keyword selection right.
They're getting tripped up by a common keyword selection snare, and
as a result their traffic levels are suffering.
----------
Why Getting the Wrong Word Order Can Cost You Big Traffic
----------
Market Samurai has many unique and cutting edge features that have
never been seen before in any other keyword research software.
One of these is Google's "Broad Match" traffic data.
Broad match traffic data is highly valuable because it mimics "real
life" web traffic by taking into account traffic for other related
keywords.
After all, even if your web-site is optimized for a single keyword,
you'll still get a lot of visitors who searched for other related
keywords - not just the one single search term.
As an example, if you optimize your site for "Vintage Electric
Guitars", you still may get traffic for "Vintage Fender Electric
Guitars", "Vintage Electric Bass Guitars" and other derivative
keywords.
This means "Broad Match" traffic data is a much better indication
of the potential traffic there is for a keyword than its "Phrase
Match" or "Exact Match" alternatives - because it takes into
account other derivative keywords that you are likely to also get
traffic from.
The problem with "Broad Match" traffic data is that it can often
get the word order of keywords mixed up, and show some weird and
wacky combination of words instead of the word order that a user
might normally search for.
i.e. it might show "guitars electric vintage" instead of "vintage
electric guitars"
If we optimized for "guitars electric vintage", we might find that
we only receive a tiny fraction of the traffic that we might have
received if we had have optimized for "vintage electric guitars" -
because far fewer people use the keywords in this order.
That's why it's valuable to check the word order of keywords before
optimizing around them.
----------
Here's How to Quickly Avoid This Mistake:
----------
To check the word order of keywords, we need to go to the Google
Keyword Tool at:
https://adwords.google.com/
And compare the broad-matched traffic figures to the phrase-matched
traffic figures for the keyword.
Let's use "copy writing" as an example - and have a look at the two
possible word orders for this keyword and find out which one of
these two keywords is the best to optimize for.
"copy writing", or "writing copy"
If we type both of these keywords into the Google Keyword Tool, and
have a look at the world-wide, broad-matched traffic data for these
keywords we see that both have 27,100 searches per month.
However, if we change the match type from "Broad" to "Phrase" (to
get an indication of which word order is more common), we see that
"writing copy" has 1,900 searches per month, but "copy writing" has
18,100 searches per month - the lions share of all traffic for this
keyword.
In most cases, assuming SEO Competition [SEOC] figures from Market
Samurai as well as the data from the SEO Competition tab for both
keywords were both largely identical, we would want to optimize for
the version of the keyword that had the most traffic.
However, hopefully this email helps to improve the results you
receive from Market Samurai.
----------
Is Phrase Match / Exact Match Traffic Coming to Market Samurai?:
----------
This is a question we are asked frequently - and the good news is -
yes, both Phrase Match and Exact Match traffic data will be part of
Market Samurai.
This feature will be added to Market Samurai in an upcoming update.
It will allow users to double-check the word order of their
keywords without leaving the Market Samurai software, and get data
in a format that they prefer.
