Duplicate Content Penalty Google

In this great post from the team at Noble Samurai, you know the
guys behind the latest ground breaking 'Market Samurai' keyword
tool, they totally explain the TRUTH about the Google duplicate
content penalty.

While it DOES exist, many don't understand the truth about the
content penalty from Google. Read on and find out exactly what
the content penalty is and how it will affect your site, content
and your eventual Google SERP rankings.

THERE ARE NO FOOLPROOF RECIPES FOR SUCCESS ONLINE

Even top online marketing experts don't get things right 100% of
the time.

Despite all of the science that goes into tools like Market
Samurai, and building educational programmes like the 30 Day
Challenge, nobody's ever created a system that provides a 100%
chance of success, in 100% of all cases.

This means you can STILL go to all the effort...

...Choose a market...

...Research, analyze, and identify keywords that might be potential
winners...

...Find a product to promote...

...Spend hours researching the market to work out what to write
about...

...Spend even more time and effort writing articles - content that
(if things don't go well) might only ever be read by a tiny handful
of people...

...Set up a blog...

...Get backlinks...

...etc, etc, etc...

As you'd know, just dipping your toe into a market to test whether
or not you're onto a winner is A LOT of hard work - even if you
have a streamlined strategy.

And after ALL THIS HARD WORK, you STILL might not even rank well
for a keyword!

And if this happens, you end up with nothing, nada, zip, zero -
nothing to show for all of the hard work you put in.

It's annoying - It's frustrating - It's heart-wrenching.

It feels like you've been kicked in the guts - and it kills you to
see all of your hard work going down the drain!

This is when most people quit.

And it's not because they did anything wrong - it's just that this
market wasn't a winner.

The problem is, there's no way to know the result in advance - at
least not with any degree of certainty.

But there IS a way to remove a lot of the risk!

It means taking some smart shortcuts, doing things the lazy way,
and testing markets faster and with less effort.

Does this sound like something you'd be interested in?

Well, the solution is to cut down the time it takes to do the most
time-consuming task - writing content!

Because, no matter what else you do...

...YOU STILL NEED TO COME UP WITH CONTENT FOR YOUR SITE!

Realistically, you only have two options when it comes to content.

OPTION 1: CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE CONTENT

The best long term strategy for getting high quality, unique
content is to write it yourself - or at least pay someone to do the
hard work for you.

But there are big problem with writing unique content from scratch...

- Writing unique content is time-consuming and hard work -
particularly if you're writing about a keyword that you know little
about.

- Most people struggle to write content - writing quality content
is a skill that few people possess naturally;

- Paying ghost-writers to write for you is expensive - but even
this takes time to manage, and (of course) money to fund;

And in all of these examples...

YOU'RE INVESTING TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY INTO WRITING CONTENT THAT
MIGHT NOT EVER RECEIVE A SINGLE VISITOR, OR A SINGLE RANKING IN
GOOGLE!

BUT... there's another option...

OPTION 2: USE SOMEONE ELSE'S CONTENT

A much more efficient way of finding content, is to use some
quality content that someone else has written, that you can legally
re-publish.

It's at this point in time that I can hear a lot of people
screaming in agony:

"WHAT ABOUT THE 'DUPLICATE CONTENT' PENALTY?"

Okay, let's bust the duplicate content myth...

There's a very strong belief in the SEO community that Google
Penalizes "duplicate content" on the Internet.

Most people believe that if you republish someone else's content on
your website, and you aren't seen to be the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the
content, then Google won't give you full credit for your content.
Instead, they will actually penalize you for publishing something
that already exists elsewhere on the internet.

There is certainly an element of truth to this theory - in fact,
Google (in its own SEO Quality Guidelines) warns webmasters "Don't
create domains with substantially duplicate content".

BUT BEFORE YOU FREAK OUT ABOUT DUPLICATE CONTENT...
...HERE'S THE TRUTH:

FACT #1. Google Can Detect Duplicate Content... but the systems
they use are not perfect.

Even a small 5-15% change of the content can often be enough to
convince Google that you're content is original.

FACT #2. First-In Does Not Mean Best-Ranked

The first-published version of the content is not automatically the
version that Google counts as the "original" version - with all
other versions counted as duplicates. In our experience, Google
gives "original" version status to the version that has the highest
CONTENT AUTHORITY.

WHAT THE HECK IS "CONTENT AUTHORITY"?

Put simply, Content Authority is the amount of search engine
"strength" that a piece of content, or web page has.

If you have 100 copies of a particular article on the web, the copy
that has the highest page rank and best backlinks will have the
highest "content authority", and more often than not, will rank
FIRST for the relevant keywords that can be found in the article...

...EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T THE ORIGINAL SOURCE!

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

This is a true gold-nugget of information - because it means that
you can ethically "steal" other people's content (from article
syndication sites like Ezine Articles, Article City, Go-Articles
and more), republish and promote these articles... and then...

...RANK IN GOOGLE USING CONTENT THAT YOU DIDN'T WRITE!...

But... There's a catch...

This strategy only works if the content has a LOW CONTENT AUTHORITY.

You can easily work out the Content Authority for most content in
Market Samurai by clicking the "Analyze Article" button that
appears next in each row of content that it found.

UNDERSTANDING CONTENT AUTHORITY IN MARKET SAMURAI

When you click the "Analyze Article" button Market Samurai pulls
back five measures of Content Authority.

1. "Phrase Count" (PC) - This is simply the number of times your
keyword appears in the article. Generally, the higher the better.
This is not so much a Content Authority measure, but a measure of
how relevant the content is to the keyword you are trying to find
content for.

2. "Index Count" (IC) - This is an estimate of the number of times
this very same article exists in Google Index. If the IC is "6",
then there are 6 other "copies" of this article according to
Google. Generally the lower this number the better it is for you if
you want to reuse this content.

3. "Page Rank" (PR) - This is the PageRank score of the article on
the site where we found the article. A PR score of "2" for an
ezinearticles.com article means that the instance of the article on
ezinearticles.com has a PageRank value of 1. Obviously the higher
this number is, the higher the Content Authority is, and the less
likely we would use this article unmodified on our own website.

4. "Backlinks" (BL) - This is the number of backlinks that point to
the article on the site where we found the article. The higher the
number of backlinks the more Content Authority the article has.

5. "Age" (AGE) - This is the date that the content was published.
Older content has higher Content Authority than newer content.

By evaluating all these five factors we can easily identify high
quality content, that has low Content Authority, publish this
content unmodified on our website.

IS IT ETHICAL TO TAKE AND REPUBLISH OTHER PEOPLE'S CONTENT?

Some people may question the practice of using other peoples'
content to rank well in the search engines.

The reality is that most authors who submit their work to article
sites like Ezine Articles, Go Articles and Article City LOVE IT
when you republish the content they created - so long as you comply
with the terms of service for that site.

(Hint: Click the "Terms of Use" button when you're viewing the
content for more details)

Why do they love it?

Because the authors of the content want their content published on
as many sites as possible!

That's why most people publish their content to article syndication
sites in the first case.

In most cases the main reason that authors allow their content to
be syndicated is that the terms of use for most article directories
specifies that you must contain a link back to the author's web
site, which is great for their SEO efforts!

And if the site where you host your content has greater Content
Authority than the article directory page where they originally
published the article, all the better: They are getting an even
higher quality backlink which helps them even more.

It truly is a win-win outcome for everyone involved.

BUT... THIS IS A SHORT TERM STRATEGY

Sure, if you do it right, you can make a lot of money just using
this principle and republishing content that you have the
permission to syndicate, and using this content to generate traffic
to your site.

Heck, I've done it myself!

At one time, I was making a lazy $10,000 per month using this
strategy on steroids!

But it's a short-sighted model to use long term.

Take it from me; you're far better off creating a genuine online
business that delivers genuine value to genuine people who you have
a genuine relationship with. "Quick buck" websites that try to
survive using tricks like the one I've taught you today appear and
disappear quickly (I might explain why another time) - but genuine
businesses stand the test of time.

That's why the main reason you would want to use the strategy I
have taught you today is to simply to TEST THE MARKET without
having to invest all the hard work upfront in writing your content
BEFORE YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET ANY RESULTS.

This can save you a lot of time, effort and heartache testing
markets if you don't pick a winner.

Once you've proven there's traffic in the market, and that you can
make money out of the traffic you're receiving, then your market
TEST is complete.

Now you can invest some time or money into creating your own unique
content, knowing that your precious time, effort and money are
unlikely to be flushed down the toilet.

Market Samurai Keyword Tool

Two explorers are hiking through the open plains of the African
savannah when all of a sudden...

...ROAR!

A lion appears out of the thick grass and starts racing towards them!

Frantically, one of the explorers whips off his boots and starts
putting on his running shoes.

"What are you doing, you fool," screams his friend, "You can't
outrun a lion!"

"I don't have to outrun the lion" he replies "I just need to outrun
you!"

==========
Outrunning Lions, and Getting Lazy #1 Rankings in Google
==========

Getting a #1 rank in Google is a lot like outrunning lions.

You only need to be a tiny bit better than the competition and you'll
outrank them.

Makes sense doesn't it? If your competitor has 100 links to their
web page, if you got the same 100 links and then added a 101st link
(all other things being equal) then you should outrank them.

Once you learn how to identify how strong your competitors are, you
can then work out what you need to do to beat them, by being that
tiny bit better.

This allows you to do three things:

1. Cherry pick "lazy" keywords that you can rank on the first page
for (if not #1) in no-time at all (sometimes in just hours or
less!).

2. Stay away from hyper-competitive keywords where you would need
to invest months or years just trying to "break in" to the front
page!

3. Identify and concentrate on the tasks that will make the biggest
difference to your search engine rankings, and avoid unnecessary
time, effort and costs.

==========
How Do You Size Up The Competition?
==========

So now that we know that we only need to be "slightly better" than
our competitors... How do we know what we need to be better at?

Google uses many factors to determine how strong each competitor is.

Using a tool such as the "SEO Competition" tab in Market Samurai,
you wield a weapon that does all the hard work for you.

The "SEO Competition" tab inside Market Samurai quickly gathers
data on 15 of the most important search engine ranking factors, and
displays them in one screen for analysis at-a-glance.

These include PageRank, Domain Age, Alexa Traffic Rankings, Page
Backlinks, Domain Backlinks, Backlinks from .edu and .gov sites,
presence in important directories like DMOZ and Yahoo Directory -
plus On-Page factors like having the keyword in the title, URL,
description and headings within the page, and even the date Google
last checked the site for updates!

Whew!

Market Samurai breaks these into both "On Page" factors, and "Off
Page" factors, and (based on their strength) displays the score for
each of these factors in a different colour - Red, Yellow or Green
- so even if you're new to internet business, you can easily see
what's going on.

And within a minute or so you'll have an at-a-glance snapshot
showing you how competitive the top-ranked web-sites in your market
are, whether it's worth "engaging the enemy" at all, or whether
it's best to save your valuable time and effort to attack a "weaker
prey" keyword for maximum effect.

==========
Two Secret Weapons To Devouring The Competition: It's Between The
Lines...
==========

OK, we're going to let you in on a little secret that was probably
a little too advanced for the Thirty Day Challenge for many of the
participants.

The competition matrix generated inside the Market Samurai "SEO
Competition" tab is nothing to be sneezed at.

It's incredibly handy for filtering out overly competitive
keywords...

...BUT it's just the tip of the blade.

The most powerful feature of this module (and arguably the whole
Market Samuarai suite) is in the backlink analysis functionality
that exists "between the lines" of the competition matrix. Click
the little green arrow in the "URL" column of each row in the table
and you'll be presented with two incredibly powerful buttons:

SECRET WEAPON #1 - PR Analysis

SECRET WEAPON #2 - Anchor Text Analysis

Let's tackle them one at a time.

==========
1. PR Analysis: Rank Higher with Fewer Backlinks...
==========

It's easy to be frightened off when you see a competitor with
hundreds or thousands of backlinks. It's easy to dismiss the
competition as "too hard".

But that's just not true.

You see, all links are not created equal.

A link that comes from a PageRank 1 site is worth roughly 10 times
more than a link that comes from a PageRank 0 site. Similarly a
link from a PageRank 2 site has around 10 times the value of a
similar link on a PageRank 1 site.

What matters is not the sheers quantity of links, but also the
QUALITY of the links.

So if your competitor has 300 backlinks, but 299 of them are
PageRank 0 and only one has a PageRank of 1, then chances are you
could beat them with 40 x PageRank 1 links, or 4 x PageRank 2
links, or just a handful of PageRank 4 links - all sprinkled
together with some lower quality links for good measure.

...Suddenly, the tide of the battle swings in your favour...

...Suddenly you don't need to waste weeks building hundreds of of
low-quality links.

...Suddenly, with a few quick punches, you can knock your
competitor flat, and take his rankings in the search engines.

YOU DON'T NEED TO COMPETE ON QUANTITY. You don't need to build 300
low-quality links, when you can build just a handful of HIGH
QUALITY LINKS.

You don't need to be afraid of sites with hundreds of links -
because you know how tough they'll be to beat before you ever step
up to fight.

(Of course, if 299 of their links were PageRank 4, I'd be backing
off and probably looking at another keyword.)

The "PR Analysis" button does all this analysis for you in just a
few minutes! Market Samurai fetches a list of the top 1000 back
links, then fetches the PageRank for each link, and puts all of the
"PageRank spread" data in an easy-to-understand table where you can
instantly assess just how strong the competition really is.

You can quickly work out what you need to do to "one-up" them.

==========
2. Anchor Text Analysis: The X-Factor...
==========

OK, so you've done a PR analysis and are pretty confident that you
might be able to beat out your competitor with a little bit of
link-building.

Before you make your mind up there's one more QUALITY factor to
consider...

Anchor Text ...the text used in links pointing to your competitors
site...

If you're trying to rank for the keyword "vintage electric guitar",
your competitor has 300 backlinks, and 299 of those backlinks have
Anchor Text that reads "music site" pointing to your competitors
site, that's nowhere near as powerful as having 299 links all
having the text "vintage electric guitar".

In fact, the actual Anchor Text that other web-sites use to link to
your site is a key ranking factor that search engines assess when
calculating where your site should rank.

It's not just the quantity of links you receive (number of links),
it's not just the quality of links you receive (PageRanks of links)
- it's also what the anchor text says, and specifically how
relevant the links are to your keyword.

Once again Market Samurai comes to the rescue.

By clicking the "Anchor Text Analysis" button after your do your
"PR Analysis" Market Samurai will download the top 1,000 backlinks,
and work out what the anchor text was for that link... and tabulate
the results for you.

This is like having "X-Ray Goggles" for looking into the power of
links.

Often you'll see that even though a competitors may have a lot of
backlinks, and many that have high PageRanks, the anchor text for
those links is not relevant to the keyword they are ranking for...

...And as a result, they're not getting the full value of the link.

Knowing this, often a number of lower PageRank backlinks to your
website, but with MORE RELEVANT ANCHOR TEXT (ie. the keyword that
you want to rank for) will enable you to lazily outrank bigger,
stronger competitor with higher PageRank backlinks.

===========
Your SEO Domination Action Plan...
===========

I hope you can see how powerful these tools are when you use them
together. The end result is that you're not gambling with search
engine rankings - you're taking a systematic, logical, even
scientific approach.

That's because Market Samurai removes a lot of the guesswork for
you, and then does what something amazing...

IT TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NEXT...

At the end of this analysis you have your blueprint to success. You
know exactly how many backlinks you need to build, and what
PageRank they need to be - AND THEN gives you some effective tools
for building backlinks!

As a result, you are targeting your competitors' weaknesses to
achieve easy, lazy search engine rankings - because you only need
to do a fraction of the work to get the same result.
