In this great post from the team at Noble Samurai, you know the
guys behind the latest ground breaking 'Market Samurai' keyword
tool, they totally explain the TRUTH about the Google duplicate
content penalty.
While it DOES exist, many don't understand the truth about the
content penalty from Google. Read on and find out exactly what
the content penalty is and how it will affect your site, content
and your eventual Google SERP rankings.
THERE ARE NO FOOLPROOF RECIPES FOR SUCCESS ONLINE
Even top online marketing experts don't get things right 100% of
the time.
Despite all of the science that goes into tools like Market
Samurai, and building educational programmes like the 30 Day
Challenge, nobody's ever created a system that provides a 100%
chance of success, in 100% of all cases.
This means you can STILL go to all the effort...
...Choose a market...
...Research, analyze, and identify keywords that might be potential
winners...
...Find a product to promote...
...Spend hours researching the market to work out what to write
about...
...Spend even more time and effort writing articles - content that
(if things don't go well) might only ever be read by a tiny handful
of people...
...Set up a blog...
...Get backlinks...
...etc, etc, etc...
As you'd know, just dipping your toe into a market to test whether
or not you're onto a winner is A LOT of hard work - even if you
have a streamlined strategy.
And after ALL THIS HARD WORK, you STILL might not even rank well
for a keyword!
And if this happens, you end up with nothing, nada, zip, zero -
nothing to show for all of the hard work you put in.
It's annoying - It's frustrating - It's heart-wrenching.
It feels like you've been kicked in the guts - and it kills you to
see all of your hard work going down the drain!
This is when most people quit.
And it's not because they did anything wrong - it's just that this
market wasn't a winner.
The problem is, there's no way to know the result in advance - at
least not with any degree of certainty.
But there IS a way to remove a lot of the risk!
It means taking some smart shortcuts, doing things the lazy way,
and testing markets faster and with less effort.
Does this sound like something you'd be interested in?
Well, the solution is to cut down the time it takes to do the most
time-consuming task - writing content!
Because, no matter what else you do...
...YOU STILL NEED TO COME UP WITH CONTENT FOR YOUR SITE!
Realistically, you only have two options when it comes to content.
OPTION 1: CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE CONTENT
The best long term strategy for getting high quality, unique
content is to write it yourself - or at least pay someone to do the
hard work for you.
But there are big problem with writing unique content from scratch...
- Writing unique content is time-consuming and hard work -
particularly if you're writing about a keyword that you know little
about.
- Most people struggle to write content - writing quality content
is a skill that few people possess naturally;
- Paying ghost-writers to write for you is expensive - but even
this takes time to manage, and (of course) money to fund;
And in all of these examples...
YOU'RE INVESTING TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY INTO WRITING CONTENT THAT
MIGHT NOT EVER RECEIVE A SINGLE VISITOR, OR A SINGLE RANKING IN
GOOGLE!
BUT... there's another option...
OPTION 2: USE SOMEONE ELSE'S CONTENT
A much more efficient way of finding content, is to use some
quality content that someone else has written, that you can legally
re-publish.
It's at this point in time that I can hear a lot of people
screaming in agony:
"WHAT ABOUT THE 'DUPLICATE CONTENT' PENALTY?"
Okay, let's bust the duplicate content myth...
There's a very strong belief in the SEO community that Google
Penalizes "duplicate content" on the Internet.
Most people believe that if you republish someone else's content on
your website, and you aren't seen to be the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the
content, then Google won't give you full credit for your content.
Instead, they will actually penalize you for publishing something
that already exists elsewhere on the internet.
There is certainly an element of truth to this theory - in fact,
Google (in its own SEO Quality Guidelines) warns webmasters "Don't
create domains with substantially duplicate content".
BUT BEFORE YOU FREAK OUT ABOUT DUPLICATE CONTENT...
...HERE'S THE TRUTH:
FACT #1. Google Can Detect Duplicate Content... but the systems
they use are not perfect.
Even a small 5-15% change of the content can often be enough to
convince Google that you're content is original.
FACT #2. First-In Does Not Mean Best-Ranked
The first-published version of the content is not automatically the
version that Google counts as the "original" version - with all
other versions counted as duplicates. In our experience, Google
gives "original" version status to the version that has the highest
CONTENT AUTHORITY.
WHAT THE HECK IS "CONTENT AUTHORITY"?
Put simply, Content Authority is the amount of search engine
"strength" that a piece of content, or web page has.
If you have 100 copies of a particular article on the web, the copy
that has the highest page rank and best backlinks will have the
highest "content authority", and more often than not, will rank
FIRST for the relevant keywords that can be found in the article...
...EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T THE ORIGINAL SOURCE!
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
This is a true gold-nugget of information - because it means that
you can ethically "steal" other people's content (from article
syndication sites like Ezine Articles, Article City, Go-Articles
and more), republish and promote these articles... and then...
...RANK IN GOOGLE USING CONTENT THAT YOU DIDN'T WRITE!...
But... There's a catch...
This strategy only works if the content has a LOW CONTENT AUTHORITY.
You can easily work out the Content Authority for most content in
Market Samurai by clicking the "Analyze Article" button that
appears next in each row of content that it found.
UNDERSTANDING CONTENT AUTHORITY IN MARKET SAMURAI
When you click the "Analyze Article" button Market Samurai pulls
back five measures of Content Authority.
1. "Phrase Count" (PC) - This is simply the number of times your
keyword appears in the article. Generally, the higher the better.
This is not so much a Content Authority measure, but a measure of
how relevant the content is to the keyword you are trying to find
content for.
2. "Index Count" (IC) - This is an estimate of the number of times
this very same article exists in Google Index. If the IC is "6",
then there are 6 other "copies" of this article according to
Google. Generally the lower this number the better it is for you if
you want to reuse this content.
3. "Page Rank" (PR) - This is the PageRank score of the article on
the site where we found the article. A PR score of "2" for an
ezinearticles.com article means that the instance of the article on
ezinearticles.com has a PageRank value of 1. Obviously the higher
this number is, the higher the Content Authority is, and the less
likely we would use this article unmodified on our own website.
4. "Backlinks" (BL) - This is the number of backlinks that point to
the article on the site where we found the article. The higher the
number of backlinks the more Content Authority the article has.
5. "Age" (AGE) - This is the date that the content was published.
Older content has higher Content Authority than newer content.
By evaluating all these five factors we can easily identify high
quality content, that has low Content Authority, publish this
content unmodified on our website.
IS IT ETHICAL TO TAKE AND REPUBLISH OTHER PEOPLE'S CONTENT?
Some people may question the practice of using other peoples'
content to rank well in the search engines.
The reality is that most authors who submit their work to article
sites like Ezine Articles, Go Articles and Article City LOVE IT
when you republish the content they created - so long as you comply
with the terms of service for that site.
(Hint: Click the "Terms of Use" button when you're viewing the
content for more details)
Why do they love it?
Because the authors of the content want their content published on
as many sites as possible!
That's why most people publish their content to article syndication
sites in the first case.
In most cases the main reason that authors allow their content to
be syndicated is that the terms of use for most article directories
specifies that you must contain a link back to the author's web
site, which is great for their SEO efforts!
And if the site where you host your content has greater Content
Authority than the article directory page where they originally
published the article, all the better: They are getting an even
higher quality backlink which helps them even more.
It truly is a win-win outcome for everyone involved.
BUT... THIS IS A SHORT TERM STRATEGY
Sure, if you do it right, you can make a lot of money just using
this principle and republishing content that you have the
permission to syndicate, and using this content to generate traffic
to your site.
Heck, I've done it myself!
At one time, I was making a lazy $10,000 per month using this
strategy on steroids!
But it's a short-sighted model to use long term.
Take it from me; you're far better off creating a genuine online
business that delivers genuine value to genuine people who you have
a genuine relationship with. "Quick buck" websites that try to
survive using tricks like the one I've taught you today appear and
disappear quickly (I might explain why another time) - but genuine
businesses stand the test of time.
That's why the main reason you would want to use the strategy I
have taught you today is to simply to TEST THE MARKET without
having to invest all the hard work upfront in writing your content
BEFORE YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET ANY RESULTS.
This can save you a lot of time, effort and heartache testing
markets if you don't pick a winner.
Once you've proven there's traffic in the market, and that you can
make money out of the traffic you're receiving, then your market
TEST is complete.
Now you can invest some time or money into creating your own unique
content, knowing that your precious time, effort and money are
unlikely to be flushed down the toilet.
